Holiday Hustle vs. Inner Peace: A Guide to Staying Grounded

The holiday season is here! For many, this time of year brings a whirlwind of joy, from dazzling lights and family gatherings to delicious food and festive traditions. While the idea of celebration is exciting, we know it can also be a lot of work. If you’re a parent, or simply someone trying to manage everything, you know this period is often filled with deep cleaning, endless shopping, and juggling an already packed schedule.

In the midst of this beautiful chaos, it’s easy for our carefully built routines to fall apart. The 20-step skincare ritual, the daily workout, the quiet morning meditation—they all seem to disappear. For those of us who thrive on structure and routine, this can be more than just an inconvenience; it can lead to a significant sense of anxiety.

Why does a change in routine cause anxiety?

Our daily routines are more than just habits; they are a source of comfort, control, and predictability. They create a sense of stability in our lives. When these routines are suddenly disrupted, our brain can interpret this as a loss of control. The lack of predictability can trigger a stress response, making us feel unsettled, irritable, and anxious. For many, a consistent routine provides a sense of purpose and accomplishment. When that routine is derailed, we might feel like we’re losing momentum or even a part of our identity. This feeling of being “off-schedule” can turn what should be a joyful time into a source of stress.

So, how do we find a balance? How do we hold on to a piece of ourselves without adding more stress?

The key is to give ourselves a break and a new way to approach our routines.

Focus on Your Non-Negotiables

Instead of trying to do everything, identify a few core tasks—your “non-negotiables”—that truly bring you joy and help you feel like yourself. These aren’t chores; they’re the things that define you. Maybe it’s reading a book for 15 minutes before bed, or getting in a short walk each day. These are the things you can commit to no matter what. By focusing on just a few of these essential habits, you can create a sense of stability without overwhelming yourself.

Simplify Your Tasks

You don’t have to completely abandon your routine. You just must shorten it. Can’t do a full 20-step skincare routine? That’s okay! Just focus on the basics: wash your face, moisturize, and use sunscreen. Can’t fit in a 30-minute meditation? Try a five-minute one instead. By shrinking your tasks, you can still feel the benefits of your habits without the pressure of a lengthy to-do list.

Ultimately, remember to be kind to yourself. This is a special time of year, and it’s okay if your routine gets a little derailed. The moments you’re sharing with family, the extra sleep you’re getting, or the lazy mornings watching holiday movies are all part of the joy.

Have compassion for yourself. You are doing the best you can, and that is more than enough.
